IT IS A MOTHER TO YOU 

This website is the second part to a series that attempts to explore the complexity of one’s relationship to smoking cigarettes through the lense of a maternal bond. 
This webpage expands the collection of smoking warning labels by combining my mother’s texts with video footage of friends smoking. By overlaying her words onto these personal moments, the work reimagines the printed warnings of cigarette packaging as digital gestures of both care and control. The act of clicking through messages mirrors the repetitive, habitual motion of smoking and the cyclical nature of motherly concern. The videos, imperfect and handheld, situate the viewer within a familiar world, one where smoking operates as a social ritual. In bringing the project into a digital sphere, this piece not only extends the archive of messages but transforms the relationship between warning and affection.

YOU ARE UNDER SURVEILLANCE

TThis project examines how visibility, guilt, and power are unevenly distributed across systems of surveillance. The printed book juxtaposes low-fidelity security images with excerpts from corporate settlements and biblical language on wealth, judgment, and injustice. 
The website extends this logic by turning the camera outward. Instead of witnessing surveillance from a distance, the viewer becomes its subject. The webcam continuously captures and “scans” the user, generating a growing wall of images reminiscent of bodega thief-walls. Motion-tracking logs spread across the screen, reporting the user’s movements with the same accusatory precision used to police low-level theft. When the viewer attempts to dismiss an image, a biblical indictment- drawn from the book- writes itself across the page, suggesting that guilt, once assigned, cannot be closed or escaped. The experience is intentionally uncomfortable: a reversal of the asymmetry the book documents, placing the user inside the visual and moral machinery normally aimed downward.
